The article focuses on the construction N’s + N known as the genitive case structure. Analysis of the data retrieved from two English Language corpora (the BNC and COCA) has demonstrated that the N’s + N structure as a typical grammatical feature of modern mass media discourse realizes certain communicative and discursive properties that constitute the core of this mixed morphological-and-syntactic phenomenon. Thanks to its anthropocentric character, the structure also possesses some functional capacities that make a valuable and indispensable contribution to the organization of meaning in mass media texts.

The emotional component of the university students’ professional consciousness is a reflection of the subjects’ attitude towards their academic and professional activity, to themselves as future specialists, or to individual professionally significant aspects of their personality and activity. 

Affective (emotional) structures play a crucial role in the individual’s consciousness as they correlate with cognitive mechanisms of human consciousness and build “a unified system or unity of affect and intellect”. Affective components of consciousness consist of emotions, moods, feelings and possess a number of functions that define success and efficiency of the individual’s activity: evaluation and prompting functions, regulating and synthesizing functions, expressive, activation and signal functions. 

It is essential to mention that successfully managing the affective component of university students’ consciousness may define their attitude towards the whole academic process, their future career and life itself. Contemporary media discourse environment that people are living in today, no doubt, makes an impact on young people’s affects, emotions and values. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to identify and evaluate how far the present-day media world influences the emotional component of students’ consciousness, whether this impact changes young people’s attitude towards their education and career goals and which affects and emotions students experience when referring to the space of media discourse in search of knowledge related to professional issues.

The experiment, conducted by the authors of this paper, has covered university students of three higher education institutions – Moscow State Pedagogical University, RUDN University and South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University in two regions of Russian Federation (Moscow and Chelyabinsk regions) which also helped to see the similarities and differences in the young people’s affective perception of their academic and professional achievements through the prism of the new media discourse environment. Recommendations on how to handle the emotional and value components of students’ consciousness (while teaching them at the university) were suggested in the conclusion of the research. 

Nowadays the Internet occupies the primary place in many people’s lives. It gives people many different opportunities including online shopping. The deep understanding of all the elements of trust building mechanisms is essential in order to guarantee future prosperous development of the e-commerce sphere as trust seems the key point of e-commerce success. The current study aims to assess trust building mechanisms of online shopping, namely customers’ comments, using the linguistic tool. By adopting the discourse analysis methodology this paper explores the language units used in the comments. First of all, the importance of feedbacks (customers’ comments) was assessed by means of self-compiled questionnaire and the results of the analyses indicate that feedbacks were proved to be significant for customers while forming the buying intention. Then qualitative data was collected from Amazon website. Customers’ comments were collected, systematized and grouped according to the specification of the comment. The following groups were singled out: attitude, duration of usage, quality, price, purpose of usage, function. Comments were divided into positive and negative as well and later on analyzed by means of discourse analysis. Two types of comments were pointed out, namely explanation and evidence (photo). Special features of online comments were pointed out.
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is considered to be one of the socially valued practices whose conceptual and methodological grounds can be articulated when seen in the light of its discursive representation. Characterization and evaluation of this area in applied psychology proceeds through analysis of expert standpoints and views rendered in secondary sources where they express the conformity level of the discourse in question to academic standards existent in psychology as a theory. Special attention is given to the propositional expression of the ideas defining NLP studies as well as to the exposure of presuppositional attitudes of the NLP expert whose textbook is under discussion in the article. The logical correctness and validity of those presuppositions are analyzed in relation to their adequate representation of scientific or mass worldview. After having exposed the author’s intentions one can state the pragmatic strategy and ideology pursued by the NLP expert in the textbook alongside with the identity of NLP as a discursive and social practice, its position among other discursive practices. The results obtained after the analysis of a particular piece of NLP discourse are congruent with the current trends typical of postmodernist consumerist society. Characteristic postmodernist ways to organize verbal interaction – in particular, forms of discourse imitation, its variation and hybridization – are found in the examples provided. A practical workbook on NLP in English was taken as a source for evidence. Critical discourse-analysis (CDA) served as the guiding approach to the problem, which was realized at some points of the study as contextual analysis, definitive analysis, interpretation method, statistical procedures altogether with quantitative estimation.

This paper is devoted to the structural-semantic evolution of French coloronyms in scientific chemical discourse. The author analyzes the definition of scientific chemical discourse and its distinctive functional-linguistic characteristics, such as aim, agents, clients, functional space, linguistic peculiarities. Coloronyms are described as colour terms, promoting the enrichment of the scientific-chemical communication. Semantic analysis of vast empirical material helps to create the classification of coloronyms based on their etymology (coloronyms of animal origin, mineral origin, synthetic origin, metallic origin). The author carries out meticulous diachronic analysis of coloronyms in French scientific chemical discourse in the XIXth – XXth centuries with regard to the structural and syntactical aspects.

French scientific chemical discourse is a special sphere of communication which is actively developing and possesses its own set of peculiar functional-linguistic parametres. With the help of diachronic analysis of the scientific-chemical texts of the XIXth and XXth centuries the author reveals structural-syntactical transformations, e.g. simplification of structural models, the tendency to the diversity of syntactical roles of coloronyms.   

The purpose of this article is to present a multidimensional view of professional speech of residents of the Ryazan region by putting focus on stable combinations of a terminological nature. The empirical material comprises elements which belong to the semantic group of lacemaking and weaving. Examples are taken from dictionaries and the data of linguistic expeditions. Main research methods are lexical-semantic, linguo-cultural analysis of selected linguistic facts and quantitative analysis.
The article contains a critical review of the interpretations of the concept cultural code and proposes the author’s own definition. The author points out versatility of the notion in question, describes its regulative, semiotic, cultural and cognitive aspects. The phenomenon of cultural codes is studied from the perspective of a linguistic approach, which is based on the idea of their imagery nature. The author describes an imagery code as a system of images that are part of an ethnoculture, are established in the practice of communication, are normative in nature and serve as signs of fragments of reality. It is emphasized that the basis of the images is the so-called cultural realia. Under the cultural realia in this work the author understands different objects of the real world directly related to a certain culture and somehow involved in any kind of human activity. It is noted that physical objects, gaining meaning in the mind of a person, become signs. Objects related to a particular area of reality, in the process of semiosis form cultural codes. The article analyzes a number of imagery codes of culture, describing them as codes of cognition and communication. In addition, the author studies the function of a cultural code, substantiating the fact that any sphere of reality perceived by the sensory organs can fulfill the function of a cultural code.
This paper is devoted to the research of the notion “concept” from the perspective of professional discourse. The aim of the paper is to analyze the nature, structure and use of the concept. To reveal the specificity of the concept, the authors study different points of view and definitions of the concept based on research of both Russian and foreign scholars. Much attention is paid to the problem of distinguishing three different terms – the concept, the conception and the meaning. Basic cognized features of these phenomena are analyzed. The authors come to the conclusion that concepts do not have an ethno-cultural specificity, but basic cognized features of the all concepts have a value component.



On November 5-6, 2019, MGIMO University hosted The First International Scientific and Practical Conference in Memory of Elena Solovova “Problems of Teaching Modern Languages”. Elena Solovova is regarded as one of the most influential and impactful figures in developing and promoting of teaching modern languages in Russia. The conference was coorganized with MGIMO University, National Association of English Teachers of Russia, Military University of the Ministry of Defence, Moscow Pedagogical State University, Esenin Ryazan State University, and Titul Publishing House. 

Elena Solovova (1956-2019) worked tirelessly on fostering and improving modern languages teaching in Russia. Her academic and pedagogical work has greatly influenced many peers and colleagues, teachers and students, in Russia and around the globe. She guided numerous PhD students and authored and co-authored countless publications in the field. She is greatly missed by her colleagues, family and friends.
